NBC's Peter Pan Didn't Even Come Close to The Sound of Music

A 2.3 in the demo isn't bad, but it still loses the night

Though what seemed like all of Twitter live-hated NBC's broadcast of the Peter Pan stage play, starring Allison Williams and Christopher Walken, it was still better than a typical Tuesday over at NBC, where the network hauled in some 2.9 million viewers in the coveted 18-49 demo (for a 2.3 rating) and 9 million watchers total.

It didn't come anywhere close to the network's production of The Sound of Music last year, though (which logged a 4.6 and 18.5 million viewers total); nor did it beat out CBS's sitcoms Mom and Two and a Half Men,
which has to be something of a disappointment given how expensive it is to license a play for the stage to film and broadcast live, to say nothing of what it costs to bring in talent like Williams, Walken and Minnie Driver.

Of course, Robert Greenblatt told Jason Lynch he was praying for a 2 the night of The Sound of Music, so the franchise is still healthy. But if NBC keeps it going, they're probably going to need bigger star power in the lead and a musical with broader recognition—Peter Pan, in many minds, feels off-brand unless it's the Disney movie from 1954.

Discussion of next year's production of The Music Man generated some interesting casting suggestions as the show wound down. - Adweek
