Here's What Marketers Need to Know About Google's Mobile Upgrades

Now on Tap has ad potential

The future of marketing on Google devices is Now. The search giant held its annual developers conference today, providing a look at the future of its mobile operating system, the next iteration of what is tentatively called M—the next letter in the alphabet after the current OS, Lollipop.
At Google I/O, there were plenty of new features for developers and marketers to consider with an upgrade to Google Now, the hub of user activity that manages calendars, commutes, reservations and other daily tasks by integrating with apps.
Google is taking all the user habits it can learn, making suggestions and offering immediate choices like which restaurants to visit, reminders and offerings.

"This is the future of how we interact," said Michael Facemire, a principal analyst at Forrester. "It could come off as a little scary, or it can come off as very convenient."
In addition to the Google Now update, there were new features enabling offline use of Maps and YouTube, and there was a new operating system—Brillo, for the Internet of Things—that connects homes, cars and screens.

Twitter Scrambles for an Ad Fix as Nielsen's Promoted Tweets Show Up in Porn Feeds

TV company pulled its campaign today

Twitter has a porn problem, and it caused one brand to temporarily halt a campaign today. Nielsen, the television and digital data company, pulled the plug on its Promoted Tweets after they appeared near adult content on the site.

Nielsen's promos showed up on Twitter profile pages called "Daily Dick Pictures" and "Homemade Porn." Ads are not supposed to appear on a profile page if X-rated content is posted there, and a bug was to blame, a source familiar with Twitter's technology said.

"As Twitter works to resolve this issue, we have temporarily suspended our campaign," a Nielsen spokesman told Adweek.

Solving the CMO's Dilemma by Targeting Real People

Linking online and offline

Ten years ago, the Chief Marketing Officer was a perfunctory role, often relegated to coming up with a big creative idea for the Super Bowl. Today, CMOs are tasked with driving the top-line revenue growth for their organization. Their biggest challenge is measuring the efficacy of their marketing.

But in an era where there are 7.7 connected devices in an American household, keeping track of the customer's path(s) to purchase is, well, pretty difficult.

The advertising adage that "media budgets follow consumer usage" isn't quite true anymore. For example, consumer behavior has moved to mobile devices. According to Flurry, a Yahoo-owned mobile analytics company, the average American spends 2 hours 57 minutes staring at their mobile screens each day, compared to the 2 hours 48 minutes spent watching TV.

This Week's Most Intriguing Digital Marketing Stats

It's been a fascinating five days for social media ads

Here are this week's 10 most interesting numbers from the digital marketing space, including a surprising dollar figure from Snapchat, as well as a data point that's going to please the likes of CEOs Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) and Dick Costolo (Twitter).

1. Here's a number: $750,000. That's how much Snapchat is demanding from advertisers to reach the app's huge millennial audience for one day, Adweek sources said. Wow. That rate is higher than a masthead on YouTube, where a day apparently costs about $500,000.

2. Seventy percent of marketers plan to increase social media advertising this year, including mobile promos on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, according to a Salesforce study that surveyed 5,000 practitioners across major brand categories.
